I got to Mars, couldn't figure out a way to get past the second room or so on Mars (the one w/ the X and the switch and the green gate -- that's REALLY hard), I tried to figure out if there was a way to save the game by pressing Esc, and pressing Esc caused a bug which crashed the game for me. It said memory reference error access violation and crashed it.

I also noticed a fair amount of typos you may want to fix. I suggest putting the game's text through a spell checker if you have access to one, otherwise when I replay it I'll give you a list of the ones I noticed.

I was wondering about that level. I changed it and uploaded v1.1. Which typos do you mean? I could only spot one..

Also the bug when you press escape doesn't interfere with the game-- it's just an error from shaltif's player when you close the game. I guess it's not getting shut down properly but I can't figure out how to fix it.

One thing I've noticed sometimes fixes that error is to *not* close the dll yourself, instead let game maker close it automatically. In other words if there is a function or a command to free the dll, try commenting that out and seeing if it still causes the error.

wow.. this is a really fun and challenging game. I got up to the earth gate and was stuck on level 2 (i think). I died so many times on it that i just had to give up, maybe alter the time on the switch will solve it, or remove the angled edges on the green section you need to fall through.

Could you also try adding a save game feature, like auto save or something?

Indeed, all this game needs is a way to save progress.  You could have it save at the start of each gate (while we look at the solar system screen).

As for SXMS-3.dll, what version of Game Maker are we using here?  If 7.0, I think I recall a change in Game Maker that requires fmod to be shutdown properly, rather than just letting Game Maker close it.  Let me do a quick search over the SXMS API (which, honestly, I haven't touched since I started work on S-FmodEx Extension) and I'll get back to you on it.

BTW, EXCELLENT GAME!  I got stuck on the same level as Chronic did (we were chatting on TS back and forth as we were playing.)

ok, if using sxfmod method (ie, not using sxeasy scripts), you'll need to stop all audio being played, release all the sounds, release the system object, then close down SXMS.

If using sxeasy, use stop, then close, followed lastly by sxms_close().

This can be best put in a game_end() event of a controller object, or wherever you handle the esc key for quiting the game.

Let me know if you are still having issues.
