Progress on Untitled has been of a different sort lately.
I am no longer churning out new content at an alarming rate, instead I am refining the very basics of the game. Examples: Gamepad support, the text engine, and the pause menu.
Gamepad support is generally something that should be added as the engine is being developed. I lacked the foresight to see that Untitled would be perfect for use with a gamepad. I'm gutting the control engine and replacing it with one including the option for a USB gamepad. Simply plug it into USB slot 1 on your PC, pause the game and go to the options menu to set your button configuration, and you're good to go.
The text engine, for those who are versed in GML, was based on the keyboard_wait() function. Now that gamepad support is on my to-do list, the text engine must be written directly below it on said list. keyboard_wait(), as the name implies, only measures the input status of the keyboard. Woe is me due to the fact that there is no joystick equivalent in the language. Should be a tough one to work out.
Lastly, the pause menu has seen a complete overhaul. Not only does it display the known world, but now many other pieces of information. You can play with options (fullscreen? music? gamepad?), as well as view progress and an ability list, as well as an unlockables menu (gasp!).
These are three very important factors, in my eyes, in determining the quality of the finished product. It may be a little boring to work on these, especially compared to new bosses or areas, but I have to do it sometime.
