Jumper Three: Jumps Matt Thorson // 23:28

Jumper Three: Jumps

Jumper has always been all about jumping.  The original Jumper had only the standard jump and the double jump.  Jumper Two provided two new moves: the wall jump and skid jump.  In Jumper Three, Ogmo's basic moveset remains the same, but feels very different in action.  Lets review those four crucial types of jumps, shall we?

1. Jump:

Not much to say here.  Simply tap the jump button to jump, right?  Well, there is a small change this time around.  The longer you hold the jump button the higher Ogmo will leap, and this applies to all forms of jumping.

2. Double Jump:

Ogmo's bread and butter, so to speak.  Jump in mid-air for another boost, equal in strength to your normal jump.  If you need to switch directions in mid-air quickly, be sure to hold the desired directional key as you jump, for a burst of momentum to that side.

3. Wall Jump:

Quite a handy ability to have, I'd say.  The wall jump works exactly the same as before.  Hold the directional key toward the wall when pressed against it and tap the up key to push off.  This technique is quite a bit weaker in height than the double jump, but you can perform it as many times in mid-air as needed (as long as you have a wall to push off of).  Of course, as mentioned earlier, you can increase or decrease the height of the jump by holding or tapping the jump key respectively.

4. Skid Jump:

Ogmo's most powerful jump, the skid jump is performed by running one direction, then quickly turning to run the opposite way and jumping simultaneously.  In Jumper Three, the skid jump sends Ogmo more than twice as high as his standard jump!

Well, that's all the jumps available to Ogmo in his normal form.  But what if Ogmo isn't in his normal form?  Ogmo as seen above and as you know him is called Prototype Ogmo, but after drinking certain potions Ogmo's very genetic makeup will change, mixing up his appearance, moveset and physics.

Stay tuned for the next episode, Jumper Three: Potions.

So, like the previous games, but with variable jumping. I shudder at the thought of what kind of twisted levels you'll design that take advantage of that.
The potions sound wicked too. Inverse gravity, anyone?

I always liked the ability to change direction at the instance of a double-jump when playing as Ogmo, it was just an effective and applicable idea that's just not all that common despite the popularity of platform games.

Crazy, crazy cool stuff. Of course, like the previous Jumper games, probably not cool enough to actually keep me playing (I find it a little too frustrating and respite-less)... but that's just me. And reading about all these awesome moves just makes me nervous about how hard the levels will be... the existence of a wall jump just means fewer walls, I'm betting...

I also really like the new graphical style. It's got a lot of character.

So basically it's mario 64 with a few less moves?

No really, I don't see what's so great about Jumper.

You're comparing Jumper to Mario 64? wow.. which Mario 64 did you play? I think I must have missed that one.

But alas... people don't like certain games, just like i don't see whats so good about many other games people seem to like. Aren't opinions fun?

Mario 64 didn't have cool potions to change your Ogmo prototype allowing you to view the world in an entirely different perspective because you'd been given an ability that you hadn't foreshadowed. It also wasn't created by a sole person :)

I agree.

You are blind to ingenious level design.

I'd prefer to call the level design vicious!
