Don't worry, I don't consider a well-thought out response flaming.  :)

I agree with you CosMind, when it comes down to it, I am truly a fan of the games, and not a fan of the hardware they play on.  I mostly just follow hardware (computer and console) because I find it fascinating stuff.

It's funny that you mention those plug and play games, because that is exactly what I thought of when I first heard of the Wii's new controls.  I think the thing that bothers me about the Sixaxis controller is that when I play games with a regular two-pronged controller in my hands (like PS, 360, etc) I move it around a bit while I play...  I think most people do.  So including motion sensing inside a controller that people are used to moving around a bit with no consequence seems awkward to me.

I'll have to wait and see though, if anyone I know happens to get a PS3.  Most people I know (including myself) cannot afford it though.   ;)

here's what jazzes me personally about the wii:

the focus is clearly not on advancing visual technology.  in turn, the designers must focus on gameplay to be successful.  and, the artists must focus on art direction and visual innovation/integrity to be successful.

now, if that doesn't pave the way for some bad-ass games in the very near future, then we've some serious problems  ;)

lol, side note:
my collegue just said he got an icq from his buddy in japan.  the cat is waiting in line for his ps3 right now.  apparently, there's a massive cold front going through, and they still have 3 hours left until the store starts selling them.  poor fools!
 ;)

On the other hand, if there are no ports of anything else, we'll certainly be needing them. :P

oh, geeze, don't curse us all this early.
did you see the wii launch lineup?  it is flooded with ports.  in fact, i'd say that 85-90% of the games are ports.

why do you see ports to the wii as a good thing?  i sure the heck won't be needing some half-baked hack of a traditional game control system onto the wii-mote.  yuck.

:o  this video scares me to death...

What games are you calling ports, CosMind?

I wouldn't refer to Madden as a port - it's got a whole new style of controls, and I *thought* it was being remade just for Wii.

I also wouldn't really call Call of Duty 3 a port either...  If the game had been out a year ago, and then was being made for Wii, I would understand, but it's not really a port if all the different versions are being released at once.

Still, I'd say the most dangerous thing for the Wii will be games like that, which come out for all three systems, and are very distinguishable (like Call of Duty 3  ::)).  Any game that you can run side-by-side with the others may have a hard time selling the Wii, because, let's face it, people are often first drawn towards a game by it's graphics.

I'd say it's unfair to call Zelda a port.

Partway through development resources were shifted to the Wii version, making it the priority, so much so that the GC version has now been delayed.

Besides, even if you do classify it as a port, I can't see any Zelda game being a detriment to any system's game library.

it's a port.  just because it is a super slick epic in an ongoing saga doesn't render it null to the same rules as other "lesser" games.  i'd actually say it's unfair to judge the game by different criteria than all the rest.

by those rules, then was mario64 ds not a port just because it is revered by some as one of the greatest games of all time?  it worked fine on the ds, but it worked much better on the 64 that it was designed for.

and don't kid yourself.  if you think that nintendo delayed the ngc version because they were so focused on the wii version, then you should probably think long and hard about the reality of the situation.

marketing strategy.  plain and simple.

i by no means feel it will be a "detriment" to the wii.  and by no means do i feel it will be less than excellent.  but, i do by all means know that it controls much better on the gamecube.  it was designed and built for that console, and then ported to the wii in the last 6 months.

CosMind, I think you are too worried about the control system of the Wii.  Before we make conjecture about how a game will feel (be it port or original) on the Wii hardware, it would be best to actually get one and use the Wii-mote ourselves.

Personally, I think the only negative about the controller is getting used to the fact that not all the actions you may wish to do are a key press.  So finding the solution to a game-play element could come down to remembering that the Konami code is "flip up, flip up, drop, drop, throw left, fling right, throw left, fling right, A, B, Do a barrel roll"
