As I aways seem to say, it's been awhile since I posted any blog of mine, so I'd figure now is a good time as ever. (At least I got something to say). Usually I'm not much of a busy guy, but these past 3 days have been far from the normal routine.
Back sometime in August, my friend Nintendofreak88 created a server for himself for various server tasks (like Soldat, TeamSpeak, IRCd, to name a few) which can be viewed here:
Server
Yes, it's inside a radio (it was part of a project of his to not make it conventional)...
Anyway, this server has been doing great, supporting all these cool activities. But a single small server can only do so much until the connection it's on becomes overused. So, as of recently (mainly for the IRCd part of his server) we decided to make our own network of servers (kinda like dynastynet). This way as his IRCd grows, it's not all connecting to one computer and bring down his small connection.
So how do I play a role in this? Well I decided to be one of the people to help Nintendofreak88 out by contributing a server box of my own. The fun part was getting on operational. When making the decision to help Nin out, I knew I had an old win98 box sitting in the corner of my room collecting dust. However, I knew it had a broken fan, ethernet drivers were not installed, nor did I have any spare ethernet cables.
So, the first day (Mon) was spent getting this computer to at least running stage. I took the Power Supply and, found out the fan did work but with the way the power supply was contructed into the case, it blocked the fan's output...so, I had to make a new placement for my Power Supply. I then got it powered up in Win98, where I started messing with getting the ethernet card functioning (driver maddness!). But I got that up and running. Then that night I got an ethernet cable from the local radioshack and boom, had the computer and connected to the net...part one done
Day 2, (Tues) was spent trying to fix an apparent processor overheating issue. I found running the computer with the power supply hanging out and the side panel removed seemed to solve the problem (at least, so I thought). Then later I spent that night with Nin getting UnrealIRCd installed and linking with Nin's already existing server. (That took all night).
On the last day (Wed) I found the heat issue from before was not fixed, the processor still kept overheating. After a lot of placement issues, fan adjustments and such, I found out the fan on the machine was installed backwards (blowing onto the processor instead of away from it)...why it was put together this way was beyond me...so I corrected that and it's been running smoothly ever since.
So that was my ventures with making a common old crappy PC into a server box usable for IRC and other server things (like maybe an upcoming video game I'm designing )
Anyway, I won't plug the IRCd server details yet cause were still in development of the network. But soon will have a place where you guys can come in and chat (for those who want to join in the fun).
EDIT: Note, this upcoming IRCd server isn't affilated with eo as of this blog entry, so don't get confused and think this is a way to chat with eoians =P...however, I'll probably be on it if you want to catch me.
