Man, what a Untitled Story rip-off!

Just kidding. I think runman was the first game I ever saw that had that style. Do you know if there were games that looked like this before the first runman game?

Awesome. Runman was one of the first GM games I ever played.

Any info on a release day/week/month?

An Untitled Story is totally a RunMan rip-off, it is heavily inspired by CoolMoose's graphical style (along with Yoshi's Island, naturally).  I actually started it right after meeting CoolMoose online and the two of us trying to do a collab, which failed.

Coincidentally, that failed collab was this game.

Coincidentally, I might be helping him with this game again.

I love your style Tom, and this game is going to blow minds.

Yoshi's Island perhaps.

out of curiosity, is this a "peekaboo, look what's almost complete" - or a "peekaboo, look what i've started working on"?

(also, i'm not sure why everyone is trying to force the visuals into the yoshi's isle box.  it's pretty easy to see a clear distinction between the two graphical designs.  guess there's just no escaping the fact that cats will never let others just create without having to tell them how their game is just like this, that, or the other...  wait, sonic the hedgehog had a blue sky in the background.  this game is just like sonic the hedgehog.  http://www.arcadestreet.com/play-sonic-mega-collection-plus-mini.htm)

Oh, I'm not saying he copied from it (and even if he did it'd be fine). It's just that Cactus asked if there were any games in a similar style, and Yoshi's Island is the closest I can think of. Yoshi's Island uses less-saturated colors and has a higher level of detail, but both styles have that children's happy drawing aesthetic. I'm surprised you interpreted that as not letting people create what they want without telling them that they're copycats.

oh, i didn't.  i interpreted it as every time somebody posts something here, there's at least one cat who replies with the fact that it's like something else he/she's already seen.  i'm just not sure if it's necessary to make comments like that at all.

no worries, i'm not coming down directly on you.  it's just a pervasive thing that's really starting to weigh on me.  i just feel that it'd be slick if the community were to start focusing on what makes each other's creations unique (rather than what they call to mind).

edit

I understand what you mean, but I think you're ascribing negativity where there's none. Saying that something looks like something else can be a positive complement as well. I think it's a mistake to assume that saying that something is like something else is some type of criticism. So I don't see why you see such comments as useless, they can be very useful and positive. For instance, Eden once said to me that Immortal Defense's visual style looks like Jeff Minter's games' style; I didn't take that as negative, but as a complement.

you're putting "ascribations" (:P) into my mouth.  i never implied that the comments had negative intent.  i stated that i feel they aren't necessary.  i don't believe that they help the creator improve/continue their work in any manner.  if it's intended as a complement, then you should be explicit about it.  i've seen way too many cases (not only here) where comments like this are made, and the creator does not take it as a complement.  nobody wins a cookie for being the first to identify relationships between two things (except in the relationships between two things game show).

----sorry for derailing the topic.  back on!----

ha!  hey moose man, is that a cameo from your sig down in the bottom left corner of the screenshot (little green dude holding the number sign)?
