An Open Letter to YoYo Games Eden // 01:31
Dear YoYo games and friends,

Can you please stop trying to shove this "Instant Play" "feature" down our throats?
I know instant play exists, you have told me and many others many many times.
I do not, in fact, have some sort of disorder where I forget about Instant Play every 5 seconds. Honest.
Why not put "play now" and "download" side by side?
I'd like to play games the way they were originally intended, if that's alright with you.

Yours humbly
Edenb

I'll sign that petition.

It seems to me that the instant-play thing is promoting the creation of extremely shallow and unimmersive games, the kind that can be run in a window, like flash or java games - ones that can be played only long enough for the novelty to wear off. It makes me wonder if they want to promote creativity after all.

It is unfortunate, but I guess that is what Mark wants.  Sad to see such a great tool being promoted that way.  But I guess too, most of the people who come into the GMC look at it as a mere toy or something to mess with, rather than actually considering any serious game development.  It's always nice to see that being proven wrong.

But anyway, I personally avoid the entire YoYo Site and rather promote my programs locally.  I just hope the GM Engine never gets crippled...so far I've seen the opposite, but since things became YoYo, it seems like we've been on a downhill track (or at best, a bumpy ride).

I may not submit my games on YYG anymore, I just don't like the way they handle their games.

That's what I believe serious GM users should all aim for. Get a GM game in IGF or similar. People should make games that make the players disbelieve the fact that it was made in GM - that's when you know that you've succeeded. The stereotype associated with GM atm doesn't seem as harsh as it was before, though.

Another big problem with YoYo is that their site is SLOW -- it takes ages to load a page. They should invest in a faster server.

It would also help if they let your browser cache stuff...

I don't mind instant play. If they eventually let us use it on your own sites and make it popular to boot, our audience is likely to grow no? If everyone on the net would have the instant play component installed, they'd be more willing to try many games, since downloading and unzipping seems to be a bother to a lot of users. Isn't that why Flash games are so popular?

I definitely prefer it to downloading games when I'm trying ones that I have low expectations in. So I don't see the problem. Sure, it could be better, but it's faster than downloading every game you want to try when sifting through the dung.

I agree, the instant play thing I actually do like. I don't like that it's so slow, I think it could have been done better, but it's a step in the right direction.

Whoever decided to call it "Instant Play" forgot what the word "Instant" meant. =/
