Re: More Mac Madness
Joewoof // 10:55Do Macs still come with one button mouses?
Two-button now. Though if you prefer one button, you can use it. :)
Are they still unable to run games and applications for the PC?
Now easily portable. Most useful freeware now runs on both systems, except that there're more Mac Widgets than Vista Gadgets. All Blizzard games run on Mac, and EA is following suit. With Intel chips, now it's only a matter of time before everything is cross-platform.
What specific apps do you use on PC though?
Is the Mac OS interface still targetted at children or adults who don't know how to use computers?
It's called intuitive, which is ideal, in my book. I don't see the point of making something simple more complicated, as it wastes more time and effort to accomplish the same things. It's funny how I'm hearing this from a GameMaker user. :P

wow, i wasn't really interested in this fan-dom battle ;) until i read this statement...
intuitive?
i'm not sure that i agree with that sentiment. i've yet to know anyone personally who can pick up the latest mac os interface and automatically know how to navigate it. i've watched tons of mac veterans operate it and stumble around apps that they've been using for years and years, even. sure, i agree it is simplified, but i don't find it intuitive. there is so much extra visual flash and motion that it ends up becoming distracting. sure, it's sexy, but it's a bit over-done.
now, i'm not claiming that windows is intuitive, either. i'm just stating that i don't think that mac os is intuitive. just like the ipod interface/input device is one of the least intuitive of all major mp3 players.
editspeaking of apps that run on mac, here's an upcoming software creation tool set that runs on all platforms:

It's all relative. Windows is so cumbersome that it makes, by simple comparison, Mac OS X seem like a dream come true.

Now that's a strong opinion. :) I believe otherwise.
Anyway, thanks for the link though.
EDIT: Very interesting upcoming game development tool. Standalones for all major OSs. High performance AND Java-based? Very nice. Completely free - to the extent of being Open Source. Fascinating. How did you come across it though, I wonder?

I agree that the iPod interface is not intuitive. Simply because to perform some actions you have to press parts of the wheel that don't indicate in any way that the action you want will be performed. Eg, going back to a previous menu, even something as fundamental as turning the thing off. You have to know which button does what, intuition will only get you so far.

that's fine. but simple by comparison != intuitive.

interesting. so, when you first picked up an ipod, you knew - by pure instinct - exactly how to operate and interact with it? you knew that lighting sliding your thumb around a circular region of the machine made selections move up and down?

Hmm. Now that you put it that way... I guess my habit of reading instructions before starting up any new electronic product seems to have distorted my judgement. My bad.
Right, just because it's easier and more efficient to use in the long run doesn't mean that it's intuitive in the beginning. I blame Steve's RDF. :P

My imagination floated towards an underground connection with insider developer secrets.

HiVE // 13:10A thumby-wheely thing is easier to use than a 4D-pad? More efficient? You sure about that? :P
