More Mac Madness Joewoof // 20:20
A couple of days ago, my friend (the sound guy; APCLdx) bought a MacBook Pro. Apparently, after some "enthusiastic" brainwashing by Apple ads (the TV ads are especially hilarious), he began to have consecutive dreams about the MacBook Pro. Even I was hopeless in my attempts to convince him to wait until October, when Mac OS X Leopard will come out. Not even the fact that the cheapest model of MacBook Pro is completely soldout in Bangkok stores deterred him. He went ahead and bought th mid-range model for $2500. zOMG.

And I thought I was crazy about Macs.

Seems like many journalists are following this recent craze. In Business Week, Apple still holds the #1 spot for innovation, not to mention that its stock is rising the fastest of all companies (from what I read). It recently appeared on the cover page of The Economist (to my big surprise, considering that they usually have some political satire). Technology Review had about 3 articles about Apple. And one reader on PC Magazine complained about its recent emphasis on Apple products.

At my college, there's a recent boom in MacBooks. At first, I noticed a couple every few days. Must be a coincidence, I thought at first. Now, it's everywhere. I feel really sorry for those who are using Windows XP on it instead of Mac OS X, though. I really do. :P Anyway, it's amazing how fast things are changing. Only a few months ago, I was wondering why people aren't gravitating towards Macs. No need to wonder now. At least in my college, it's already happening.

And for good reason. I don't know how fast technology have evolved, but APCLdx confirmed that MacBook Pro's battery indeed lasts 6 hours, as advertised. Amazing. Well, my dad's Acer Travelmate can barely manage an hour and a half, which is pathetic. I know the battery had degraded, but it was around 2 hours at the beginning anyway. What's certain is that Acer doesn't even include its batteries in its tech specs. Again, a Mac is very well-rounded; Apple gives extra care to components other manufacturers often neglect.

a computer is a computer

you get what you pay for

you use it for what you need to use it

Agreed. Evangelical loyalty to a particular brand is so pointless. Especially one that's so expensive.

Pseudo effects are quite powerful, my friend. ;) I assume you guys aren't too fond of alternative treatments either? Heheh.

Instead of saying the obvious - that it is pointless, why not instead ask why so many customers eagerly convert themselves into religious zealots?

Because of Steve's Reality Distortion Field (RDF).

Yeah, it's pretty powerful. Must... resis.... EMBRACE!

What's surprising about Steve's RDF is that it actually turns each person into a relay station for further spreading the field... like a zombie computer spreading spyware. Apple is so advanced, it's scary. What do we do about it?

I need help. I can't install an anti-spyware utility into my brain. Ugh!

In other words, "If it looks good, it's worth spending money on"...

Is "It's called marketing" too brief a response? :P

Or:

"Ooh Macs, don't they look prddy!!!"

*Hands over twice as much ? as would be required to buy an equivalent PC*

Haha, well, I guess both sides are exaggerating. :P

Seriously now, I won't be getting a Mac if it's just marketing. I believe that so-called powerful technology is pointless if it doesn't actually improve productivity. What I'm really buying is a tool to enhance my workflow. :D

Do Macs still come with one button mouses? Are they still unable to run games and applications for the PC? Is the Mac OS interface still targetted at children or adults who don't know how to use computers? If the answer to any of those questions still is yes, then I won't give Mac another chance.

My first computer was a Macintosh and I've used Macs a lot while I was studying webdesign at school. Everytime I've compared the use of a Mac to the use of a PC, PC has always been my first hand choice. Hell, I'd rather use a modern cellphone with internet capabillities, or one of them next gen consoles with a web browser than using a damn Mac. It was a serious pain to be forced to use a macintosh during my education.
