Well here's a little effect using surfaces that I developed for a minigame of mine, and Chronic suggested I make a practical example. Now I know not too many people work in isometric (crying shame!) but the same technique could be applied to a top/front view like the typical old school RPGs.
This demonstrates shadows being cast onto isometric blocks from above. You probably have to see it to understand what I mean!
